Our topic this half term is ‘Pirates and Explorers’.

In literacy we will be…

  • Identifying past tense verbs in a sentence.
  • Identifying and using the first person when writing.
  • Using time connectives to sequence our ideas.
  • Writing recounts in the past tense of Neil Armstrong’s mission to the moon.
  • Identifying and using key word types – nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs and conjunctions.
  • Using exciting vocabulary to write adventure stories about pirates.
  • Using the key features of narrative to retell familiar stories about pirates.
  • Understanding sentences in different forms – statements, exclamations, questions and commands.
  • Understanding the difference between past and present tense and applying this to writing and spelling.
  • Learning to use capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks accurately.

In maths we will be…

  • Learning to recognise the place value of each digit in numbers to 100.
  • Comparing and ordering numbers to 100.
  • Using < and > accurately to compare numbers.
  • Counting on and back in tens from any given 2 digit number.
  • Counting in 5’s and 3’s from different starting points.
  • Finding and using number bonds for any number within 20.
  • Adding and subtracting multiples of 10 from any 2 digit number.
  • Using knowledge of number bonds to bridge (regroup) 10 when adding and subtracting.
  • Measuring length/height using standard units of measurement.
  • Comparing and ordering measurements and using knowledge of place value to apply to estimating and measuring length/height of a variety of objects.

In our topic we will be…

  • Learning the names and locations of the world’s oceans and continents.
  • Creating pirate treasure maps using directions and compass points.
  • Designing a treasure island using a key to identify the physical and human features of the environment.
  • Learning about the lives of a range of explorers, including Neil Armstrong, Francis Drake, Christopher Columbus, Charles Darwin, Margaret Mee, Roald Amundsen and the HMS Challenger.
  • Learning about recent space exploration.
  • Discussing the potential challenges and benefits of future exploration of the Amazon rainforest.
  • Creating a timeline of the explorers and expeditions we have learnt about.
  • Planning an expedition to the moon.
  • Designing rockets to take us to the moon and evaluating our products.
  • Writing diary entries as if we were Neil Armstrong landing on the moon.
