At Paddocks the children learn about several contrasting periods of History each academic year. These form part of the whole school long term plan so that as children move through the school they encounter a wide range of historical periods all of which offer an element of new learning to them. The children learn about areas of both local and national historical significance, along with making their own historical enquiries and investigations into events of the past.
The children make use of many different sources of information in order to actively participate in their own historical research. This makes the children ‘history detectives’ which offers them a sense of ownership of the period of history they are researching.
At Paddocks Primary school we feel very fortunate to have forged close links with the National Horseracing Museum in the new Palace House Museum in Newmarket. We also subscribe to their ‘Palace House Front Runners scheme’ giving us access to a wide range of resources and training. All of the staff have attended a tour of the museum and have a good understanding of the historical links to our town.
Over the course of the school year different classes have visited areas of local historical significance and linked these with important national events, such as the vital role King Charles II played in making Newmarket the important racing town it is today.
We are very proud of the local and national historical links the children learn about at Paddocks and our aim is to encourage all of the children in our school to develop a fascination for and genuine interest in the past.
